BJJ Gi Fabrics Explained: GSM, Pearl Weave, Gold Weave and Ripstop

Two gis can look identical on a hanger and feel completely different on the mat. The difference comes down to two things: the weight of the jacket fabric, measured in GSM, and the weave that fabric is made in. Understand those two ideas and the rest of gi shopping, training weight, competition rules, durability, becomes simple. This guide explains GSM in plain words, compares the three fabrics you will meet most often, pearl weave, gold weave and ripstop, and shows you how to choose for the way you train and compete.

What GSM means and why it matters

GSM stands for grams per square meter. It is the weight of one square meter of the jacket fabric, and it is the single best shorthand for how a gi will feel. A lower GSM jacket is lighter, cooler and easier to pack, and it dries faster after washing. A higher GSM jacket is thicker and more substantial, holds its shape better, and stands up to years of gripping and pulling. Neither is better in the abstract; they suit different players. Our custom gis offer two clear choices. A 350 GSM jacket is the light option, popular for everyday training, hot academies and travel. A 450 GSM jacket is the heavy option, built for durability and structure. Most players who own one gi and train several times a week land on the heavier fabric, while players who rotate gis or train in the heat often prefer the lighter one. GSM applies to the jacket. Gi trousers are usually a lighter cotton or ripstop, since legs need freedom to move more than they need armor.

Pearl weave vs gold weave vs ripstop

Weave is how the threads are interlaced, and it changes the surface your opponent grips and the way the fabric ages.

Fabric Where it is used Feel and weight Best for
Pearl weave Jacket A textured surface of small raised bumps; mid to heavy weight, durable, holds its shape well All round training and competition; the most common modern jacket weave
Gold weave Jacket Softer and smoother than pearl weave, traditionally a little heavier; gentle on skin Players who find pearl weave rough and want a softer, traditional feel
Ripstop Trousers Very light, smooth fabric with a fine grid pattern woven in to stop small tears spreading Trousers that stay light, move freely and dry quickly

Our jackets are pearl weave, in 350 or 450 GSM, with ripstop trousers. Pearl weave earned its place as the standard jacket fabric because it balances the three things a jacket must do: resist stretching under grips, stay comfortable across a long session and survive hundreds of washes. Gold weave is the traditional alternative, softer against the skin but less common in modern ranges. Ripstop belongs on the legs, where its light weight and tear resistance matter more than grip texture. One note on construction: whichever weave you choose, look for reinforced stitching at the stress points and a collar with foam inside it, since those details decide whether a good fabric becomes a long lasting gi.

Training vs competition: which to choose

For training, choose on comfort and routine. If you train daily, a lighter 350 GSM jacket is easier on your laundry cycle and your shoulders in summer. If you train hard twice a week and want one gi to do everything, 450 GSM gives you the tougher jacket. Competition adds rules. The IBJJF uniform rules limit gi colors to white, royal blue and black, and IBJJF rules discussions place legal jacket fabric in the 380 to 650 GSM range. That range matters when you choose: a 350 GSM jacket sits below it, while a 450 GSM jacket sits comfortably inside it. So the simple rule is this: compete in a 450 GSM gi in white, royal blue or black, and train in whichever weight suits your week. Ripstop trousers are standard across our range, including the competition color gis. As with any rulebook, check the current IBJJF text before a major event, since details change over time.

Why a 450 GSM gi, and made-to-measure fit

Players searching for a 450 gsm bjj gi are usually after two things: a jacket that does not stretch out under grips, and a gi that is still legal and presentable after years of use. The heavier pearl weave delivers both. It keeps its structure through a session, the collar stays firm, and the fabric shrugs off the friction of daily training better than lighter weaves. Weight is only half of fit, though. A custom fit bjj gi starts with the right cut for your frame: adult sizes A0 to A5, slim S variants with longer sleeves for leaner builds, and a husky A2H cut with more room through the body. Match those to the size chart, add embroidery that places your name and academy logo exactly where you want them, and the result is a gi that fits like it was chosen for you, because it was. That is the point of made to order: the gi is cut, stitched and finished around your measurements and your design, not pulled from a generic size run.

Frequently asked questions

What GSM should a BJJ gi be?

For daily training, 350 GSM is light and quick drying, while 450 GSM is heavier and more durable. For IBJJF competition, choose 450 GSM, since legal jacket fabric sits in the 380 to 650 GSM range and 350 falls below it.

Does the IBJJF have a GSM rule?

Yes, in effect. IBJJF uniform rules and their discussion place jacket fabric between 380 and 650 GSM. Our 450 GSM jackets sit inside that range; always check the current rulebook before an event.

What is the difference between pearl weave and gold weave?

Pearl weave has a raised, textured surface and is the modern standard for durability and shape. Gold weave is softer and smoother against the skin and slightly more traditional, but it is less common in modern gi ranges.

Is ripstop IBJJF legal?

Ripstop is used for trousers across our range, including competition color gis, while the jacket must be a proper woven gi fabric like pearl weave. Check the current IBJJF rulebook for the final word before competing.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
